Choosing a name is one of the hardest and most important decisions a transgender person has to face. It is the name you are going to be referred to as and associated for the entirety of your life...so it has to be just right. I tried out 6 names before I found the one that I liked, so you may not get it right first time. Many people are lucky enough to be assigned the correct name at birth, but transgender people don't have the luxury and must come up with their own. There is no way to correctly choose or name or no set of rules that say you can't have a certain name, but I a here to advise those who just don't know where to start:

Name yourself after something you like

Two of the first names I though about were Phoenix and Rogue, after two of my favourite comic book characters. You could take inspiration from:

Your favourite TV series

Your favourite film

A book

A person you admire

A celebrity 

I recently renamed myself 'Rome' from 'Ryan' as I have been there twice with friends and have many happy memories of being there, so I wanted to feel that level of happiness when I though about my name.

Start with a letter and work up to a word

I took a minute to think about which letter of the alphabet would suite me most; after I decided on R, I then started to look at names. This narrows down the choices significantly and allows you to focus on one section at a time.

Think about what you want people to think of when they hear your name

Think about any connotations to the names you like, for example, River suggests calmness and beauty whilst Rogue suggests wildness and strength. Think about how different names link to your personality: how they make you feel, what you think of when you say them, how the word feels to say - you'll know when you have a name you like.
